Visual Studio Code is based on Electron, a platform used to deploy Node.js personal computer applications running on the Blink layout engine. Although it uses the Electron platform, the software is not a derivative of Atom, it is actually based on the Visual Studio Online editor (codenamed "Monaco").
Unlike similar development environments like Visual Studio 2015, Visual Studio Code works entirely at the file and directory level. The editor is suitable for debugging and developing web and cloud applications, and supports more than 30 different programming languages, including C#, C++, PHP, Java, and HTML. Features like syntax highlighting, parenthesis matching, or IntelliSense provide more clarity when editing complex code.
Other features include a keyboard optimized interface with custom keyboard commands, integrated debugging tools for Node.js, TypeScript and javascript, support for ASP.NET 5 and Node.js web technologies and Git support. The set of editor functions can be extended with over 1,000 extensions from the Visual Studio Marketplace.
